Afraid of retirement
From time to time, you'll hear about an older person who is afraid of retirement, because they can't imagine how they're going to manage all the extra spare time. Do you imagine that you'd feel the same way when you're at that stage?

Re: Afraid of retirement
I stand a good chance of forced retirement in another month and it scares the piss out of me ~ ONLY because we can't afford medical insurance. If it wasn't for that, I would LOVE it. Being bored is not something I fear. I don't share that crazy idea that people have to feel stimulated every damn minute of the day.

Re: Afraid of retirement
i hear you Mama.... because my mom is a federal employee... she cannot collect my dad's full social security along with her pension. they deducted $1400 per month from the social security once she retired... and what is worse is that when the pension gets a COLA to offset the cost of the rise in health insurance premiums, soc sec deducts THAT cola amount from the soc sec. Translations: every time there is a COLA, she is in the whole... deeper and deeper... not to mention that she cant keep up with the increase in rent every year

Re: Afraid of retirement
We have been retired about 7 years now, and we have loved every minute of it. I always heard from lady friends about husbands who retired and expected her to be the entertainment committee. How both were bored silly. However my hubby can entertain himself, and I have never been bored in my life. There is always a book, TV, crossword puzzles, you name it , if worse came to worse there is always housework. But I would really have to be bored to get into that.

Amen! Of all the gazillion things there are out there for hobbies and pastimes, even volunteer work ~ there HAS to be a few things for everybody. I have a widower brother who lost his wife unexpectedly 2-1/2 years ago, and he has next to no interests outside of "people" (socializer), and reading. He and his wife relied on each other for all their enjoyment. I've tried to coach into finding some interests, but . . . He has, at least, joined a couple of local committees to keep busy at something.

Re: Afraid of retirement
Both my grandparents worked well past the age of retirement, my grandmother still working, I imagine I'll be the same way.

Re: Afraid of retirement
I don't expect I'll be able to afford to retire so it's nothing I worry about.

If I could retire next week, I would. I'd find something to do, trust.

Re: Afraid of retirement
I just went on line and checked my social security benefit payment projection.
I CANNOT wait for retirement. When I retire at 62, which the gov't calls "early" retirement I will collect a whooping $1200 month. If I wanna wait until 70, I will get $1700 a month.
Hmmmmm... definitely going at 62. $1200 a month will be enough to get me around the country in my 5th wheel...

Re: Afraid of retirement
Hmm...I need to check and see how much I would get from SS if I ever become disabled. I know it's going to be pennies.
