Did you have a lot of nosebleeds as a child?

I did not at all. Now, it seems that my son is getting them. It is freaking me out a little, but from what I read it is not that uncommon in adolescence.

I had them ALL the time as a kid starting at 9 and it lasted for a couple of years, then I started getting them at 13 again and I've had them here and there ever since. Once when I was 9 I had one that lasted 20 minutes, kind of freaked out my mother, but the one I had last winter was THE absolute worst, it dribbled for 2 hours before I finally figured out it was a clot I had to blow out and when I did, it was about 1/3 the size of my hand.

Sometimes in winter when the heat is running high in the house I wake up with a slight nosebleed. This is caused from the dry heat in the house.

I sure never did. My father always had nosebleeds as a kid too though his were usually from what I guess you would call an environmental cause:

No allergies at all. And the times he is getting them are very random. I read that kids who wake up with them just need a humidifier in their room as it is too dry. But, he wakes up with them at times, otherwise he gets them when he is sitting or playing or whenever. I am going to start a log of it and if they become more frequent, probably take him in to be seen.

Hey Red, you might look into getting a jar of vaseline and have him put it up his nose after the bleeding stops. That's what my mother did and it cut them down quite a bit.

Thanks for the tip. Does that help even if he is not getting more than one daily?

I used to get them pre-pubescent just like that. All of a sudden warm drops of blood would start dripping from my nose for no reason. I outgrew them eventually.

I think it does. What happens is the nose gets too dry internally and that causes a lot of nosebleeds, at least it did with me, and the vaseline keeps it lubricated so it doesn't happen as often.
Now another question I have, because I get two types of nosebleeds, does he get the kind that it's literally running out or like the kind where it just kind of drips and it stops on its own, or does he get both? I had the runners as a kid that you have to pinch your nose for 5 minutes for, and I get the drippers now which are blood clots which have to be blown out to stop the bleeding.

So, that Vasaline must have to be placed pretty far into the nose? Knock on wood, he is only getting the more mild ones. They bleed for about a minute, so not running for so long, or a need for him to pinch his nose or turn his head back.

Well I'm not good at gauging that kind of length but internally I guess about as high up as where you have to pinch your nose.
But if they're not running and don't need to be pinched it sounds like it could be the blood clot kind, do you know if when the bleeding occurs there are clots in it? Because I've noticed even small ones can make that happen.

I don't think there are clots but I will have to ask him to make sure. His last several, other than this morning, have been away from me.

Actually Red, you brought this up at an interesting time because just two nights ago I got another nosebleed. I was brushing my teeth and felt my nose running, I looked in hte mirror and saw it was blood, so I blew it out and it stopped but it's kind of rare for me to get them in the summer.
Okay, I tried figuring out how far up you have to put the vaseline and I think I was off by about half an inch, around the middle of the nose's length, or as high up as he can reach, you just don't want him trying to poke his brain while doing it, heh heh.
If it is clotted, it's very simple what to do, the first time I did this everybody thought I was crazy, but if it's a blood clot, you just want to blow it out. But I would recommend having him stuff a Kleenex in the neck of his shirt like a napkin, because that stuff can splatter a bit, that way it saves a lot of laundry.

Thanks for all your advice on this. I really appreciate it. I am worried because I don't want it to be a sign of something worse. The first thing I read this morning is that it can be one of the signs of Leukemia, so I got really worried, but after reading further, he hasn't any of the other signs, so I chilled out. But, also, I don't want him to be the "nose bleed kid". That can be super embarrassing in jr. high.

I remember my nose would sometimes bleed when I was in class, which was embarrassing. They'd whisk me away to the office until the faucet stopped leaking.

Oddly enough I never got them during school, now sometimes I got them during the breaks, or when we were out of school, and a lot of them came at night, especially in the winter. And there was one time when I was 13, I don't know if it had anything to do with the blow to the head I'd taken a couple of days before, but I was awakened at 5 in the morning with a nosebleed that just came out of nowhere. Now they NEVER just happened during the night so I don't know what that one was about.

It's very funny because for all the nosebleeds I got I never once thought it would be a sign of anything. To me a nosebleed was just a nosebleed, nothing more. Now the first time I ever got one, I was 9 and I was panicked, it was just pouring out and I ran downstairs to my mom crying because I had no idea what was going on. It didn't take long for me to become very nonchalant with them, while now everybody else gets nervous when it happens because they don't get them so don't know what it's like.
But 'symptoms' are very general, could be anything as it is, I mean how many things are there in the world where nausea is one of them? So you could have any one of maybe a thousand or more diseases, or you could just have eaten something that didn't agree with you.
