Red Skelton

Is anybody here familiar with the comedian Red Skelton's TV show or movies? I don't even know how I first got interested in this guy but I love watching him, he is SO funny:

I wish I could find more of those with Jr. the Mean Wittle Kid

Unfortunately Youtube doesn't have a lot of his best work up, but it gives a little bit of an idea of his comedy.

How many people think his name is Red Skeleton? I hope he was as nice off stage as he was on.

There's a very interesting story I read in Jamie Farr's biography. About the only time Jamie got a spanking as a child, he got it because he sneaked out to see a Red Skelton movie, years later when he worked with Red on his show, Red told a story about a 10 year old boy working either shining shoes or hocking papers, I don't remember which, and he was telling a customer it was to buy a ticket to see Ed Wynn, his role model. The man gave him a ticket to the show, and when the 10 year old boy went to the show, Ed Wynn was the man who gave him the ticket (out of makeup, Red didn't recognize him). So you have three generations of comic role models, Ed Wynn inspired Red, and Red in turn unknowingly was a role model for Jamie Farr. Very interesting.

I think Red Skelton was one of the funniest comedians of all time. And he did it without needing foul language. Much like Bob Hope was, although Red had the elastic face to add to his routine.

I've heard of him, and seen a few clips of him here and there, but I'm not that familiar with his work.

Red was by FAR the funnier of the 2, though Bob Hope's book I Owe Russia $1200 was hysterical to read through, especially when he talks about Jayne Mansfield losing her earrings in the middle of the night, calling him about it, and he tells her (if I recall correctly) nobody's going to go out and look in the snow for her rings in the middle of the night, and suddenly every military man in the area is out there with flashlights. laughing

I don't recall seeing any of his movies but I did watch him every week on television.

Just today I was remembering a line from Freddie the Freeloader when asked what he did for a living. He said, "you know that lint you find in your pockets? I put it there."
