    MIDNIGHT EXPRESS Empty MIDNIGHT EXPRESS

Post by Tony Marino Wed Jul 20, 2011 2:57 pm

Anyone ever see this movie? It is the true story of an American man that gets caught trying to smuggle hashish out of Turkey and his nightmare in a Turkish prison. This was a great movie, I think it may have been up for an Oscar as well as the actor that played Billy Hayes (Brad Davis). I recommend this one if you have not seen it.

Haven't seen it in a very long time but it was good. After seeing this you would think people might think twice before trying to smuggle. Scary stuff & probably much worse than depicted.

No, I had never even heard of it, but the trailer does seem intriguing. I wonder if it's available anywhere online.

I have seen the real Billy Hayes on TV doing an interview, I think TCM had a special on him one night when they showed the movie. He had to stop talking at some points because he got so emotional so yeah it probably was a lot worse than what the movie showed. He was an innocent boy from Long Island.

Netflix only has the DVD. Even Amazon's not streaming it.

I saw this movie in the 80's and loved it. But I did not sympathize with Billy Hayes' predicament. Too many Americans forget that ~ gasp! ~ things are different elsewhere! And that goes for smuggling drugs. The movie could have been a deterent for someone considering such stupidity.

This is true, but you read the book and the kind of people they've got locked up in prison for hardened crimes, right down to the 11 year olds, it doesn't really sound too different from things here.

If you read the book then you would know that things are very different from here. They tortured and beat the prisoner's and some they beat them so bad they killed them. They would put them in asylums with other insane prisoners and the living conditions were not much better than living in a pig pen.

For all I know, that's not much different from here. When I was 10 I read letters from men in prison describing the conditions, and the guards beating the prisoners was no rare occurrence.

Push this movie to 3:41 and see what happened because he wanted a blanket. Guards in American Prisons don't do things like this:

You would hope not but I wouldn't put anything past them; I'm convinced there's a whole other side that they don't show the viewing public on Locked Up.

If prisoner's got treated like that it would be splattered all over the media, they love stuff like that. I think the prison's here are more like what we saw on HBO's Oz. I hope I never find out.

Oz wouldn't be a big relief over Midnight Express since about every week on that show somebody got shanked or their neck broken or castrated and thrown on a barbed wire fence or whatever.

LOL they also had cable TV, clean facilities, good food to eat, got to exercise regularly (if they survived being shanked during their workout)
