I expect to have it at least six or seven, but I think any new car should last its owner ten years.

my mother used to trade hers in as soon as she paid hers off. but with her 95 mitsubishi she loved so much she kept it til 09. My 96 mustang lasted til 08 and was totaled when some jackass on sleeping pills banged into it, or i would still have it---thats how good it ran. This new one i have, i will have atleast 10 years, maybe 15 or 20 if i take good care of it and no morons smash into it. Its built ford tough with an awesome engine that can handle high mileage.

Do the routine maintenance and a new car should last for many years but sometimes alternators, water pumps, etc., wear out. The question becomes at what point is it too expensive to keep fixing.

Every new car that I buy I plan to have for at least 5 years....but all new cars should be built to last their initial owner a decade.

Re: How long should a new car last you?
I've always kept my cars about 10 years or so, and I'm only on my 4th vehicle.
My first was a 1982 AMC Spirit
Second was a 1991 Chevy Corsica
Third was a 2000 Chrysler Concorde
and now I'm driving a 2009 Toyota Rav4
