Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep won the actor/actress Oscars. Him for the role of a newly divorced father having to care for his young son, she as the flaky mother who abandons them both (leaving the workaholic father is very understandable) so she can go "find herself". She knows it's just a movie, but to this day my wife still doesn't like poor Meryl Streep. Justin Henry plays their son, Billy and later popped up as Molly Ringwald's btratty little brother in Sixteen Candles

Good movie, I saw it once, Meryl Streep made a good villain for it.

Indeeeeeed, in court they made a big deal about she made more money than he did so that makes her better qualified to raise him...she walked out on her kid, and she's making more money because she DOESN'T have him, it never made sense to me how he can be the bad guy when he's the only one who stuck around to raise the kid she couldn't be bothered with because sabes que 'she needed to find herself'. To say nothing of all the mental trauma her walking out did to her child, and then letting them think she was still gone when she was in town watching them.

Meryl Streep is one of the best of our lifetime. I can't think of anything where her performance was anything other than fantastic.

Indeeeeed, I don't get people who say they feel sorry for her, that she's not a villain, yes she is, she's trying take the child she abandoned, away from the only parent who loves him.
