How do explain DeNiro or Brando? Both have had stellar award winning careers and they have been the subject or ridicule more than once

Because I disagree that they were being impersonated in the same vein that Shatner is. Doing someone's voice is one thing but all impressionists include Shatner's "acting" mannerisms. He's known for chewing on the scenery.

That is why it was so easy for young Chris Pine to convince us he was James T. Kirk in the prequel Star Trek. His mannerisms and body-language walking onto the bridge of the Enterprise were Shatner's.

Kirk in the Captain's Chair - Again. (Pine Channeling Shatner)

There have been actors that ~ in my own opinion ~ were never good actors, but had their own unique style and personality that appealed to viewers. Can think of several: John Wayne, Marlon Brando (whom I liked only in 'Godfather'), Humphrey Bogart, even Clint Eastwood.

I honestly don't know why studio continue to cast Owen Wilson in films. I haven't liked him in anything I've seen him do.
