Maggie Gyllenhaal And Hugh Dancy Star In 'Hysteria'; Victorian-Era Film On Female Orgasm
Maggie Gyllenhaall and Hugh Dancy are going to have a scream this fall.
The two stars headline the new film, "Hysteria," that tackles the delicate narrative of the female orgasm in the advent of the vibrator.
Set in Victorian-era England, Dancy and Jonathan Pryce are doctors treating female hysteria but are frustrated with their imperfect, crude methods.
Thus, we welcome a primitive, though effective, vibrator. Gyllenhaal plays Pryce's fiery daughter who bares witness to this female revolution.
The trailer does not shy away from its subject matter, so loosen your girdle, things are about to heat up.

I just saw the trailer for this movie yesterday in theater. I cannot find an exact release date for it in the U.S. but it is sometime this fall. Know that as absurd as it sounds, it is based on true events.
I researched this in 2000 when the FDA approved a clitoral suction device for women with sexual problems.
I likened this to the 19th Century treatment of women presenting with symptoms of "swelling in the genital area, sexual fantasies, and excessive vaginal lubrication." The treatment, done by Victorian era physicians was manual massage of the vulva, causing "hysterical paroxysm" and relieving those symptoms.
I wrote an essay titled, "Playing Doctor," which never got published anywhere except online. But it tied in the suction device with the invention of the vibrator, which is the theme of the upcoming movie.
