It is often said that, compared to the US, Europe has a more 'enlightened,' 'liberated' and socially 'progressive' attitude about life in general. If this is true, do you envy their way of thinking? Would you consider relocating to a European country if you had the chance?

There are no sub-tropical European countries otherwise I would. They ran most of the Puritans out of Europe hundreds of years ago and they landed in the U.S. where we are stuck with their sex-negative mindset as a culture.

No. If I was ever forced out the U.S., the first place I would consider going to is Canada.

Well first of all, there is no question that most European countries are more liberal and socially progressive than the US. Even Canada is more liberal and socially progressive than the US. In fact, the only English speaking countries that even come close to our level of "conservativism" are Australia (which basically wants to be the US) and South Africa (which is about 30 years behind the US socially). Most Americans (liberal and conservative) will typically agree that Europeans are more progressive. The only difference is that conservative think that progressive is a bad word, and liberals think it's a good word. Liberals want the US to be more like Europe and conservatives think that Europe is the devil!

Having said that...I lived in England for 3 years and in that time travelled to France, Belgium, Spain and Germany. And while Europe definetely has its perks, it is not without it's faults as well. Spain is rather nice weather wise (at least when I was there), but the weather in the rest of Europe SUCKS! France and Germany are COLD in the winter time and it's always raining or dreary in England. After 3 years, I was definetely happy to get back to southern California. On that basis alone, it would be hard to imagine actually living anywhere else. Plus, I have to stay in the US until I retire from the military. After that (and if something completely radical happened here) I might consider moving to The Netherlands, or New Zealand.

Everyone talks about how liberal and progressive Europe is, but I've never been that intrigued or interested. I also heard that they aren't sticklers about bathing, cleanliness and that the people in some European countries tend to have a bit of a stench.
