Have you ever been friends with a bigot?

Have you ever been friends with someone who was bigoted, and did they ever take any shots against you or someone you were close to?

I have had some bigoted friends before, but none ever said anything against me. I wanna meet the person who actually kept being friends with someone who degraded them to their face.

Oh yes, I was friends with a female for about 2 years before her true colors came out. We were out to lunch together one day and she made some nasty comments about black people. I told her that I did not appreciate what she was saying and that one of my closest friends was black. She said basically that I was a piece of shit for being friends with a black person and that Lincoln should have never freed the slaves. I sat there in total awe not believing what I had just heard. I calmly and with class (my first reaction was to curse the shit out of the stupid bitch) told her off and added a few colorful names in the process. I then got up and left her sitting there to pay the check. She tried to call me a few times after that and attempted to apologize but I told her that someone like her does not have a place in my life.

Being biracial has frequently put me in that sort of odd predicament, where I'd be around certain people (both white and black) who assumed that because I am not full the other thing, that it was okay for them to casually make slanderous or snide remarks about it and I wouldn't see it as a big deal. The galling part is when they look at me like I'm taking it too seriously, or have *sided with the other*, when I show that I didn't appreciate what just came out of their mouth.

I know exactly what you are saying Chris, I have been in situations where people are slandering Italians, Gays, Hispanics and think its o.k. because we are all "friends" Its not o.k. and comments about race, sexual orientation and nationality should be kept to ones self if you have nothing positive to say.

Yes. The ironic thing is that bigotry isn't always "black" and "white" (pun.)

I have known quite a few individuals who held very bias slants against [insert demographic here] people but, ironically, still associated with them. I knew a (white) girl in college who hung out with a host of black friends, regularly flirting with black men, all while still having some of thee most racist views. It was as if she thought that claiming herself having black friends somehow gave her more leeway to be a bigot (I'm guessing in her mind, her retort would have been "how can I be racist, when I've got all these black friends?!")

And sadly I know quite a few homophobes, who I can't even have discussions with.

I know a guy who claims he doesn't like gay people. And I was became friends with this guy and I was shocked to find out he could possibly have identity issues. He used to say all the time that he wasn't black, that he was Hispanic. Well, I don't know too many Hispanics with the surname 'Brown' so I told him that if he was, you are obviously a BLACK hispanic. He still didn't see it that way and I let it go, cause fuck it, if that's what you think you are, then whatever. But then one time he texted me this gem: "so from one spic to a nigga, how are you?" And then I had to break him QUICK.

I'm Jewish but don't have such an apparent Jewish surname and am not orthodox, so often times people have no idea and because of that I have heard some anti-sementic or lightly intolerant comments from folks around me. Surprising at how funny kids think it is to draw swastikas on paper.

When I was in college I had a friend who was a HUGE racist towards blacks. He had a negative attitude about any minority, but blacks were the ones he was the most nastiest about. I started wondering how long it would be before he started saying something about ME because I'm 1/2 Arabic and am darker skinned. I was right to be suspicious because he started making little "just kidding" cracks about it. Later I heard from someone else that when I wasn't around he talked alot of shit and said all sorts of racist things about me. I don't know why I was ever this losers friend.
