It's hard to believe that accomplish director Lone Scherfig (An Education) and rising actress Anne Hathaway would accept this script. This rom-com is a loser on all levels.
An on again off again relationships over time has been done many times before. But that's not the problem. There is zero chemistry between Anne and Jim Sturggess. I was never convinced that they should be together. It became a tired over-long superfluous film, with an awful Hathaway erratic British accent. My biggest disappointment was how Patricia Clarkson (one of my favorite supporting actresses) was used.
The film opens on July 15,1988 the day they both graduated college. Over the next 20 years we see their good and bad times. Sturggess is a playboy drunk. Hathaway an ambitious dreamer writer. What we see each July 15th is suppose to update what has transpired.
I imagine the film tries to tell us that opposites attract and fate has away to determine our life with others or not.
