A double standard about homeschooling Empty
PostSubject: A double standard about homeschooling   A double standard about homeschooling EmptyTue Aug 30, 2011 6:54 pm

This is something that's been bugging me for a while; in public school it's alright for kids to be below average, below the mark, hell, it's alright in the schools if the kids are grades below the one they're in...that's apparently okay by somebody's standards, and parents are certainly not going to call their kids idiots, no parent wants to think their kid is dumb even if they are. BUT, at the same time, when you're homeschooled, you can't be below par like the public school kids, you cannot be stupid, when the whole population is judged by a handful, you have to be better than the public school kids so you can be considered AS good as they are.

People point to one homeschooled kid or one homeschooled family they know who are 'weird' and say 'see? What did I tell you? They're all like that, it's only a few who are actually normal', but you don't see people turning that around and saying the same about public school kids, even though it's often the case:

People complain about homeschooled kids not being able to socialize, public schools are full of kids who despite their exposure to hundreds of other kids, still don't have friends, but oh well they're in public school so we can overlook that.

People look at homeschooled kids and say 'yeah but they're never going to be able to get a job in the REAL world', well 1. we've got plenty of public school kids who can't even rub 2 brain cells together to figure out washing dishes requires hot water and detergent, and 2. how many people have graduated college with degrees and STILL can't find work?

People point at homeschooled kids and say they just play all day, or they're only learning religious brainwashing from their parents, nothing that's in a REAL education, and yet the public school system has turned out millions upon millions of students over the years who can't even read, but that's apparently tolerable.

All studies available show that homeschooled kids at the very least perform AS well academically as public schooled kids, at best they excel FAR above them, and homeschooling doesn't involve standardized tests that kids must be indoctrinated with the correct answers for and that takes precedence over actual education; and yet people still say homeschooled kids are stupid, retarded, don't know anything, and yet they don't care to comment about all the public students who fall severely below the line for even average student, but they think all children MUST go there in order to be normal and have a successful life.

Welcome to the problem with America. The problem is that mainstream America is still full of closeminded people unable to accept anything outside of their box. They think by labeling it "progressive" and labeling things that they don't like "old fashioned," that they are somehow "open minded." Pulease! The average America is still just as closeminded as they always have been, they have just shifted what is in their cozy little box.

Right now, Public schools are in that box and Homeschooling is not. Therefore, they must attack homeschooling. It's as simple as that. Just about each and every argument against homeschooling is full of crap. The ONLY valid one is that perhaps a parent is unable to do it due to a job. But every other one, complete crap. The thing about homeschooling is I think it really flies in the face of a lot of the secularist agenda. So it must be defeated on all fronts.
