Would you look? Empty Would you look?

Post by Supernova Sun Sep 04, 2011 4:05 pm

I'm having an argument with somebody about something from the movie Fright Night, and if you've seen it you'll know what I'm talking about, anyway I decided to see what everyone else thinks.

Okay in the beginning, Charley and Amy are making out, he wants to sleep with her, apparently he's been trying for about a year, and when she finally says yes, his attention is suddenly turned to what's outside the window and he tells her the next door neighbors are moving a coffin into the cellar. She doesn't believe him, gets all pissy and leaves. What I have NEVER been able to figure out is if she doesn't believe him, WHY doesn't she just LOOK OUT THE WINDOW? That would've cleared up everything.

Okay, the person I'm having this argument with says that Amy's response was a normal one...normal how? It never occurs to her that a guy who's been trying to nail her for almost a year, FINALLY gets his chance, and that takes the back burner to whatever he's seeing out the window, why would he make that up? It makes no sense. If I were in Amy's position, when he said they were moving a coffin in I'd be shoving him over to see it for myself. But oooooh nooo, her boyfriend is the horror junkie, and what reason would they have for thinking it's a vampire? Until this point they don't know vampires are real, so yes she's totally reasonable to just storm out instead of actually seeing it for herself because looking isn't important, what's important is he blew her off but there doesn't have to be an explanation for that. I don't buy it, so WHAT if they didn't think it was a vampire? People ordinarily do NOT haul in caskets to their homes to use as furniture, I would want to know what the hell was going on, did somebody die? Did they steal the coffin and maybe a body with it?

How about everyone else, would you look, or would you just pay no attention to it whatsoever and go home with no further thought on the subject?

From what you describe, it is a poorly written scene to enhance dramatic effect. And the only way to enjoy such a contrivance is to suspend disbelief. No, IRL any normal person would look rather than cause a whole walkout scene over nothing. So, whoever is arguing with you over this is supporting the poorly written contrivance over a realistic perspective.

Now, don't even mention that embarrassing contrived scene where Sandra Bullock is supposedly terrified of a puppy, which makes her run naked from her bath. I liked The Proposal because of the onscreen presence of Bullock and Reynolds but that scene should have been written differently.

I'd pay not attention to it whatsoever and continue to go ahead and have sex.

i think she didnt bother to look because it was habitual rejection that he gave her. She was so frustrated because she was always competing with horror tv/films. Now that she was willing to give herself to him, once again she felt rejected because of a "horror" situation. He was distracted by something else and had no interest in her, and so she had no interest in him or what he was talking about. He could have said that an alien spaceship landed on the roof and green men jumped out, but her defenses were up due to repeat rejection of attention.

Except to hear Charley talk, he hasn't been rejecting anything, she's the one who's ALWAYS saying 'Charley stop it!' whenever he's trying to get anywhere with her. So she finally says yes and all of a sudden what he's been trying to get at for so long doesn't matter anymore, I would think that would make somebody VERY curious as to what could suddenly be so much more important. And there's a big difference in being distracted by a horror movie on TV, and looking out your bedroom window and announcing the new neighbors are hauling in a coffin.

I agree, Amy should have gotten up to look for herself and if she didn't see anything she could have questioned it or just continued where they left off.

co-signs Besides, IRL, I doubt any normal heterosexual male would even bring it up until after he finally reached The Promised Land. They probably wouldn't say anything if the house was on fire. "Oh man that was fantastic! Oh and by the way, I think my neighbor just put a coffin in his basement."
