    Contagion (2011) Empty Contagion (2011)

After seeing "Contagion" you just might have second thoughts about shaking another's hand

An unsensational (it's advertised as a thriller) frightening look at a global epidemic disaster, spreading a lethal airborn virus.

Considering the director (Suppose to be Steven Soderberg's last film), a star loaded cast, and a script writer who's worked on notable films....this film was a disappointment.

It not only follows an uneven script, but at times is marginally dull and corny. Particularly, Jude Law who plays a blogger spreading more fear and wild ideas. In fact, I left the theater feeling not one of the leading cast had a memorable performance. The beginning (set-up) is the best part of the film, but eventually feels like a laboratory-documentary, such as using sub-titles to let you know the count (days) and city. Additionally, the character development was vastly understated. In other words, the star of "Contagion" is the virus.

For me, the worse part of the film was what the film makers did with Gwyneth Paltrow and early on (as the trailer tells you), but she does have a nice sounding cough I just enjoy looking at her. I imagine the point of the film is to be born with genes similar to Matt Damon, and please stay away from pork, and Hong Kong.

Hang around for the end. You will see the virsu

    B (2 1/2 stars)

What you describe sorta sounds like "And the Band Played On" which was supposed to be a docudrama about the beginning of the AIDS virus in the US. It had a lot of stars but we followed the development of the virus.

That in my opinion was a good movie however... you did not expect suspense/thriller. And still you saw the struggles of the doctors trying to fight the industry to test the blood supply etc. Twas interesting.

Thanks for your point of view. Was considering this movie, now i have different expectations for it.

Same here, I figured I'd be getting out to see a movie again for the first time in 3 months, but I don't think I'll waste my money. I do have a question though for anyone who's seen the ending, does everyone die?

    Spoiler:

The virus is over 135 days (when the film ends) and during that time millions die. Not sure of the exact number. Actually, if you have seen the trailer you note right up front Gwyneth Paltrow dies and the son. But evenutally a anti-virus saves the others.

The above is only my opinion. I'm sure there are others that may enjoy the film. I just notices that RottenTomatoes gave it above average rating. The audience was less liking.

This was my movie pick of the week and I want to tell you this is a worthwhile movie to see. I agree with the 82% of aggregate critics on Rottentomatoes who like it - and the 70% of audiences that do.

I thot of the movie And The Band Played On while watching this one and they are similar except that one was a docudrama about events that actually happened and this one is a docudrama about a fictitious but plausible flu-like pandemic that kills millions of ppl. And just as with And The Band Played On, the focus of the movie is not the numerous name-worthy actors in it but the progression of the virus, the chaos of societal breakdown in face of a worldwide killer disease and the race to stop the disease.

The movie opens with Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow) flying back to Chicago from a business trip in Hong Kong. She has a cough.

Back home in Minneapolis with her husband Mitch (Matt Damon) she gets progressively sicker, faints and has seizures. Rushed to the hospital, she dies and pending an autopsy they consider it meningitis. Mitch’s stepson also gets sick and dies and he is put into isolation. But apparently he is immune to the disease and he and his daughter Jory (Anna Jacoby-Heron) have to adjust to the new reality.

The movie then shows us that others are getting sick with flu-like symptoms and dying all over the world. This comes to the attention of Centers for Disease Control and Dr. Ellis Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) leads a team to investigate.

It is soon apparent that this is a worldwide pandemic and the projections are for millions of ppl to succumb to the disease if a vaccine is not found. The World Health Organization is on it and in the US the TSA and government are making contingency plans for mass deaths and social disarray. This movie is scary because you know this would happen.

Part of the reality of the movie is a conspiracy blogger Alan Krumwiede (Jude Law) who is spreading messages to millions that homeopathic cures work and that the CDC and government are keeping the truth from the ppl. We know this guy would (does) exist.

I enjoyed this movie, perhaps because it is more realistic than the usual end-times story and in a way we have already seen the disinformation, ignorance and overreactions of ppl when faced with a deadly virus that was not as easily spread. This movie even made reference to the Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1918 that killed 50 million ppl or 1% of the world’s population.

I found the movie fascinating and timely (have you had your seasonal flu shot yet?)
