Do you know how to swim?
Do you know how to swim? could you save yourself if needed? Do you think that every child should be taught to swim to prevent possible injury or death?

Yes, I think so, and yes, definitely. The thing I don't get is people who go on ships, who don't know how to swim, that one never made any sense to me because what if you had to abandon ship immediately and swim for your life?

Re: Do you know how to swim?
Yes and yes. My Dad figures that my brother and I could swim before we could walk. Always known how and have always loved the water and yes - I think every child should know how to swim and also know the dangers of the water - how to be safe around it.

Re: Do you know how to swim?
i don't understand people who live/grow up on islands and don't know how to swim. My friend from the phillipines, and also my sister in hawaii--- NEITHER know how to swim. I'm like..."yo! you people are surrounded by water and volcanoes... if one erupts would you atleast attempt to jump in the water and swim???"
My sis told me, "it's only an island when you look at it from the water"

I'm guessing your sister saw Jaws at least once? Is she the one who passed? Sorry for your lose . Oh and you ain't out swimming a volcano so being able to swim isn't going to be that much help. BTW, given your history, can we all sleep better at night knowing you can swim?

Re: Do you know how to swim?
no i have 3 sis and a bro... the hawaii one is still alive. The biker babe with the nipple rings who wrestled in coleslaw and won wet t shirt contests passed. She was a trip. One of these days I am going to write a whole book just about her! you would have loved her.... broke every door in the house trying to hit someone as a kid and fought til the day she died.
I might not outswim a volcano... but my ass is gonna die trying! And yeah, with my flood history i can swim very well!

Re: Do you know how to swim?
I am a very poor swimmer. I only kind of taught myself when I was 18. I always tried very hard not to impose my fear of water on my son. He seemed at one point he was going to be just like me, but then he learned how to swim and now he is a wonderful swimmer and loves it.

Re: Do you know how to swim?
I never got that comparison because if something goes wrong and you have to jump ship you DO have options, they may not be very good ones, but the odds are probably better than if you're on an airplane and something goes wrong.

The odds aren't any better jumping in the middle of an ocean from the deck of a cruise ship that would prob. be 3 or 4 stories or better. How many people go on cruises? There are people who refuse to get on a boat just like those that refuse to get on a plane. For the most part, it's a little ridiculous to think people should know how to swim because they want to take a cruise.

I was on a cruise at age 19 and only knew how to swim just barely from what I taught myself. I wasn't worried because I didn't think the thing would sink. I worry more about a plane crash over water than I did on the ship.

Re: Do you know how to swim?
Jumping off a sinking cruise ship is not the best option even if you know how to swim. If you've ever been on a large cruise ship you will see numerous life boats that look like ships themselves, plus other flotation craft that will be in the water.
And for those who can't swim a lick, this will probably keep you bobbing until someone picks you up.
Now, about those parachutes on commercial airliners for those of us who can't fly.

Think that is great about your son... i think swimming should be a required course in school.. even if they have to go to some sort of summer camp at the Y to get it.
I was on a cruise ship in Alaska and the glacier pieces breaking off got stuck in our engines. I have a great video of the captain/his men analyzing the situation and deciding what to do. They had to lower men down to try to chip away at it. I kept saying "if we go down, save the damn video camera so i can sell it to CNN, MSNBC & anyone else who will pay for it!" LOL
