I'm not really qualified to answer because I'm white and have never experienced the overt racism of the past or the overt or subtle racism of the present so I can't say how much things have improved. I hope they have.

It's a lot more subtle and people as a whole know better....or at least they should. But racism is just as rampant now as it was then. Something that can be TAUGHT never dies. Racism is taught.
