I've been reading some of the comments from the SVU board on IMDb and I'm glad I didn't bother wasting my time, it sounds like they're giving Elliot the same runaround they did Mike Kellerman on Homicide.

I guess I should just be glad they didn't kill him off....which is halfway what I expected them to do. But I see they went this route to leave it hanging so he could possibly come back.

Yeah but somebody pointed out they're making it sound like the shooting was dirty, so if he comes back they're going to have to do a moment of clarity of 'we found out you did the right thing after all' or something of that sort, and I don't think those ever end well.
