Occasionally there is an event that happens on this planet that EVERYONE touched by it remembers for a lifetime.
They remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when the news of that event came to them.
My grandmother remembers the sinking of the Titanic and my parents remember the attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941. News was slower then, they may not have heard of it for many hours or days - tho I'm sure Pearl Harbor was going out on radio near real time.
Everyone here knows of 9-11. I was at work when word that a plane had hit the World Trade Center Tower. At the time it was considered an accident, like the plane that once crashed into the Empire State Bldg. But this was a clear day with modern radar. We were watching on the TV in the cafeteria when the second plane hit and I remember telling co-workers "We are at war."
Going back I remember when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in late January 1986. Again I was at work at a warehouse when the news arrived. I felt a knot in my stomach, when something great and beautiful meets an unexpected destruction. It was a cool and clear day in Florida and I walked outside to look into the sky - to see if I could see any part of the smoke. I didn't but that is a sight that will always remain.
I guess the first event in my lifetime was the assassination of President Kennedy. I was in the Air Force on Nov 22, 1963 stationed at Kelly AFB where I had watched Air Force 1 take off on its trip to Dallas. News of his death filtered down by others (what kid listens to the news). Shortly we were confined to base on a Red Alert but that didn't last more than a day or two.
So, anyone here have an event that is permanently etched into your memory where you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you heard of it?
