Devils Night, the night before Halloween, used to be a big thing in Detroit. According to my dad, when he was young, it was a night for silly, harmless pranks; then over time it morphed into something sinister, resulting in houses being torched and property being damaged. Over the last fifteen years, the city has gone out of its way to distance itself from the term 'Devils Night,' and now calls it 'Angels Night' in an attempt to discourage vandals. In the meantime, curfews are bumped up for kids and police patrol the streets, looking to haul any in who are found out wandering about past a certain time.

Anyway, I'm getting off the subject; my question is: is Devils Night (a night for pranks) recognized in your area? If so, have you ever pulled any pranks on it?

I've always known it as Mischief Night. TP hanging from trees, houses pelted with eggs, car windows soaped, smashed pumpkins. Not much of that goes on where I live but for years it meant burning cars in Camden, NJ. With the recent layoffs to the police force, there'll probably be more of that.

We don't acknowledge it here.

I haven't had any problems with it. I've been in this area for four years and never had anyone pull a prank on me or no major incidents going down. And of course, I never participated in any Halloween prank. Halloween is not a cause for 'celebration' to me.

No, never heard of it or experienced it, either here in Oregon, California, or even Texas. Glad, too ~ sounds like a fun-killer for Halloween to me.

Nothing like that around here. If there is, I never hear about it.
