    Compulsive hoarding (or pathological hoarding) is extreme hoarding behavior in humans. It involves the collection and/or failure to discard large numbers of objects even when their storage causes significant clutter and impairment to basic living activities such as moving around the house, cooking, cleaning, showering or sleeping.

    Animal hoarding involves keeping higher than usual numbers of animals as pets without having the ability to properly house or care for them, while at the same time denying this inability. Compulsive hoarding can be characterized as a symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder rather than deliberate cruelty towards animals. Hoarders are deeply attached to their pets, and find it extremely difficult to let the pets go. They typically cannot comprehend that they are harming their pets by failing to provide them with proper care. Hoarders tend to believe that they provide the right amount of care for their pets.

    Umm, I can think of some old people that I've met that like to keep a bunch of junk, but I don't think they would fall into the extreme of hoarding like that. For the most part though, no.

    Yes! One of my friends calls herself a hoarder but she doesn't hang on to useless junk ~ her place is simply crammed because she has a literal shopping addiction. She was seeing a counselor for that and I think it's helped her some.

    Another of my friend's mother ~ now SHE is a hoarder, and her house looks pretty close to the extremes you see on TV.

    I know people who are extreme pack-rats and ultra disorganized and in need of a good clean-out, but they're not to the point of what you see on that TV show "Hoarders" where they practically have to condemn the property, fumigate and/or just burn it down.

    No one close to me, but I have some elderly aunts and uncles down south who literally keep everything....right down to 30 year old stacks of newspapers.

    Yes, My aunt (by marriage) has a sister who is a hoarder. She had to buy the place next to her to move into when her place became too full.

    The closest person to that was a maternal great aunt. She was never as bad as the people you see on reality TV but she had some crap squirreled away when it came time to clear out her tiny apartment when she passed.

    my mother was like that. We grew up in that awful environment... i still to this day do not know how someone did not call social services. Once the house literally start to fall apart, she moved in with me and left everything there. The county came and knocked down the house and threw out everything in it. She isnt like that now tho... makes me wonder if having so many kids and a dead husband just depressed her so much she couldnt take it

    No I have never actually known a hoarder. I watch some of those Hoarder shows on TV and some I would call hoarders others are just plain lazy pigs.The pigs are the ones who sit and allow others to clean the mess without objecting to it all being thrown out. Its hard to believe people can live in such filth.
