What would you do if this happened to you?

You're in a theater, church or office sitting next to total stranger with a cell phone in plain view. They get up momentarily and while they're gone, their phone starts ringing at an obnoxiously loud level. Everyone starts looking at you like it's your phone, and are obviously annoyed by the sound.

What would you do?

Just it's not mine & I'm not touching it. If someone else wants to they can deal with the consequences but it's not my problem.

That would be horrible! I would probably say out loud, "It's not mine."

Not much more you really can do. Legally anyway. I hate cells going off in what should be a quiet setting. But even though they should have had more courtesy, it's still their property. I'm not messing with it & sitting in close proximity to it doesn't make it my responsibility. But if another person there wants to take it upon themselves I'm not going to stop them.

In a church or office, if I had an idea where the owner was I'd probably take the phone outside to him/her.

In a theater. . . I like Shale's answer.

So you wouldn't rat out "someone" who picked up the phone and took it out of the theater and returned shortly to their seat - without a phone?

I would pick it up, answer it and hang it back up.

I would look back at the crowd and say "it ain't mine."

i would probably put a jacket or purse over it to muffle the sound

I would shut it off.

If it was that loud and disruptive, I would pick it up and turn it off.
