When you were a kid, was there a certain film you wanted to see that your parents wouldn't let you?

Were you forbidden from seeing any films as a child?

Nope. Nothing in theaters then was even rated but PG-13 is likely the highest any would garner today.

When I was little my daddy borrowed some VHS cassettes from my uncle and on one of them there was Chained Heat and Body Double. I remember my uncle telling my dad that I couldn't see THOSE movies and when we got home the warning stood.

No movies...well, they had Coming to America and wouldn't let me see that...but mainly it was TV shows where they put their foot down though we really didn't see a lot of movies as kids, mainly just what was on tape or on Disney.

Other than porn, not really. Oh yeah, my dad wouldn't let me listen to Rudy Ray Moore and Richard Pryor standups. If there was a movie that had a sex scene in it, they'd tell me to close my eyes or leave the room....but I really wasn't "banned" from watching any movie. I could watch films with shit being blown up.

no my mom let us watch everything. she said that since she explained movies/tv was fake, that there was no problem letting us watch slasher films and psycho and 83's THE THING--- which was really scary as a kid.
Since Shale mentioned PG 13, i figured i bring it up--- I recently read that PG 13 rating came about because Steven Spielberg had made Poltergiest and it was coming out in the summer when kids/teenagers go to the movies the most. If it was rated R, then the teens couldnt get in. After he petitioned and pursued, PG13 was invented. Poltergiest was another scary movie for a kid!

I was a teen, I think, and "Town Without Pity" was on late-night TV (weekends). Mom knew about that movie (about a girl who was gang-raped) and she forbade me to see it. This was in the late 60's (movie was made in '61 or so).

We didn't do much movie going when I was a kid and as Shale noted there was no rating of movies in those days. So when I did go no one worried about what I might see, I do think those were the golden years of movies because I wouldn't have a problem letting little kids see any of the movies that were made back then. Although my son said The Wizard of Oz was scarey.
More I am so grateful to my grandmother for taking me to get a library card when I was 5, she also didn't put limits on what I could read like so many parents did in those days. I still love to read. While movies of today don't interest me all that much.

I think some kids books are worse than adult books. I took a class in children's lit and was forced to read Matilda, Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, and many more. Matilda was filled with neglect and abuse, dont even get me started on peter pan! They were shooting arrows to kill people!

I liked Matilda...but I agree, Peter Pan, we grew up on the Mary Martin play and Neverland seemed like a great place, I wished it was real, then you read the book, and what a depressing place to live, they didn't even have anything to eat, all the meals were make-believe.

Only thing I couldnt watch was porn and maybe some select R movies my parents rented from the video store. But they never said I couldnt see a new movie at the theater cause it was rated too high.

I was pretty much allowed to watch anything as long as it wasn't X rated. There were some movies where if it had like way too much cussing and violence in it my mom would tell me to turn the channel (ie: Goodfellas, New Jack City, etc) but other than that, I was pretty much good to go.Chris wrote:When you were a kid, was there a certain film you wanted to see that your parents wouldn't let you?

If it was rated R, my mom wouldn't let me watch it. My dad didn't give a hoot, long as it kept us quiet.
I remember when "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice (In the Hood)" came out (I still LOL@the title...wtf) and my uncle took me and two of my cousins to see it without informing my momma--I guess they figured she was always the party pooper and didn't want the opposition. I remember sitting in the movie theater thinking, "My momma gonna whoop EVERYONE'S tail if she finds out I'm here watching people doing it at a backyard party in the daytime!!" I closed my eyes most of the time LOL.

Mom never would have cared, but Dad would flip if he walked in on me watching anything with sexual innuendo or swearing. He would always bitch about it saying that his brother would never let his kids what such trash. Which always made me so pissed because Dad clearly forgot that there was a lot he made me do that wouldn't be allowed under my uncle's watch. Such as sitting in the bar for hours, which Dad had me do with him all the time. The shit I encountered with that was just as bad as any movie.

Poltergiest scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. For the longest time, I thought that movie was rated R. Can't believe it was PG.wants2laugh wrote:no my mom let us watch everything. she said that since she explained movies/tv was fake, that there was no problem letting us watch slasher films and psycho and 83's THE THING--- which was really scary as a kid.
