    Taboos Empty Taboos

Post by Forgiveness Man Wed Jul 07, 2010 8:43 pm

Just about everything has been done in films before. But in the modern era, there are few taboos that still remain. Are there any taboos you see left in film? Even if there are a few exceptions, is there something that modern movies as a whole just do not do? Do you have any personal taboos for what you see in movies?

The graphic murder of children is still pretty taboo in films.
Interracial love stories, I think, are still pretty taboo as well.

I don't know if you'd consider these taboo or not. You don't see a lot of women in the starring roles that are taking them seriously and giving them credit for their capabilities, it's either from one extreme of they're obsessed only with shopping, having a boyfriend, eventually getting married and having kids, 'do I look fat?', and if they're not in a relationship then the whole movie revolves around they HAVE to be in one. You do not see a man doing that ever. And if she's not that, usually she is the wife/girlfriend who shoots down every idea the men have because she knows better, because she's soooooo mature and responsible. For some reason Hollywood doesn't seem to think we want to see interesting women on the screen.

Another one you do not see, a platonic relationship between a man and a woman, and this one goes back a long ways, it was always there, of course some movies didn't have it as much, but it seems in any movie today especially, you put a man and a woman together, by the end of the film they are going to be in some kind of a relationship. Once again, I don't get why Hollywood is so afraid of the idea that a man and a woman could be friends, like that's SUCH a revolutionary idea, or like they think nobody wants to see that, everybody just wants to see romantic couples.

And then, this one I'd say is very much a taboo and still one...the idea of two men being close, like you can often see two women being close, being, what's the word, intimate, affectionate, something of that sort...if it is done, it's either made into a joke or it only comes up at a point in the movie when things go so far south for one of the characters, like it can't ever be a normal thing. It's like, you've always been able to see two women kiss in a movie but if two men do it, that's just crossing some kind of boundary, what one it is I don't know, but there you go.
