What childhood diseases did you have?

Did you have chickenpox, measles, mumps? How bad?

I had the chickenpox, and it was SEVERE! i could feel them down the inside of my throat and on my eyelids. My brother had them at the same time and it was horrible

We had the chickenpox too, my brother had them as a kid AFTER getting the vaccine, and the vaccine had just about killed him and then he got a severe case of chickenpox to boot, so that shot was really worth it, wasn't it? I didn't have the shot and mine looked like rug burn, they didn't know at the time that I'd had it. And THEN, when I was 18 and my brother was 23, we BOTH got severe cases of chickenpox two weeks apart from each other. But, that is the only one we've ever had. And for me especially I'd say that's doing damn well because I was not vaccinated after my brother about died from them, and I've never had measles, mumps, German measles, smallpox, you name it.

Thanks. That's why I don't get people who insist all kids (barring those allergic) SHOULD be vaccinated, it SHOULD be law, you're a bad parent if you don't, they would rather kids die from what's supposed to protect them than what is supposed to make them sick in the first place. What sense does that make?

I didn't have any diseases growing up.

I had chicken pox and measels, and both kept me out of school for a week. I remember sleeping an awful and watching TV.

Never had mumps.

I only had the chickenpox.

I had everything - all the so-called "childhood diseases" There were no vaccinations - we got our immunity the old fashioned way and it was a real threat to any pregnant woman who may not have been immune.

Many of you claim not to have had these diseases that EVERY child got in past generations. If you haven't been vaccinated and think those are unnecessary, consider that ALMOST EVERYONE ELSE was vaccinated.

You forget that humans are herd animals and diseases go thru herds. In my generation especially living in a crowded city, the disease was spred to all children because it was always active in the herd. Now, if almost no one else has the disease then you who are unvaccinated get a pass. But, remember you have still not gotten immunity. If some one from somewhere brings this disease to you, you will catch it. I'm glad mine are out of the way - don't even remember them - but had my titers checked and I'm still immune.

Polio used to be considered in the childhood diseases. I am of the first generation to get the polio vaccine - therefore I did not die or remain crippled with an atrophied limb (like some had when I was a kid). IDK if they still vaccinate for poliomyelitis because it appears to be gone (like smallpox). Again, once removed from the herd long enuf diseases can go extinct. But I recall one case where a kid was vaccinated against polio and her father caught the disease from her because he had never been.

Here's a scary thot. Smallpox has gone extinct in the wild but it lives on in samples in labs around the world. (It could be weaponized - so have to have some for making vaccines) I have had several vaccinations against it but a lot of young ppl have not. Good Luck with that!

Yes, Shale, smallpox is definitely lethal.

Several years ago I was in the ER, and the guy next to me (a migrant worker who spoke through an interpreter) did not know it but he had tuberculosis. And I could "feel" the panic in the doctor's voice. I had my husband shut the curtain immediately.

People should still get vaccines for that because TB has made a comeback and I believe most of it comes from across the border. It,too, can be lethal and recovery time is very long.

I've only had the chickenpox. It wasn't severe or anything. Normal chickenpox.

As far as smallpox vaccines go... it has not been used for decades. We used to be able to determine a person's age by it. My sisters who are now 51 and 50 have the smallpox vaccine mark, but my 48 yr old sis does not and never got the vaccine. When older men or women would lie about their age to seem younger, we would look at their arms to determine the true age.

I just looked it up, and the US vaccines ended in 1972, and was a routine shot for 10yr olds. So anyone born after 1962 does not have the vaccine, unless they were military which stopped vaccinating recruits in 1990.

This would be a MAJOR catastrophy.
