If going on a long drive, or even across country--- would you prefer to use interstates for speed, or would you choose back roads for scenery and possible interest point stops?

Re: Interstates or back roads?
I like both. Speed is preferred driving TO a destination, whereas other routes are sometimes preferred on the way back if time permits. I do love road trips, though I'm not always up to enduring them well.

Gotta ride the Blue Highways (William Least Heat-Moon). Much slower but for us well worth the time.

When I'm driving, I only stop for gas. I like to knock it out. I'm getting on the interstate.

Re: Interstates or back roads?
I'm not a fan of sitting in a car for longer than I have to so what ever is the quickest way (which is not always a major highway.) There was a time when I had to make semi-regular trips to western PA (almost 300 mi/5 hrs one way) and I found an alternate route that got me off the toll roads and was about 20 miles shorter by taking more "back roads". It was also a more pleasant trip scenery-wise.

Re: Interstates or back roads?
Depends on how much time I have. I do like to stop and see new places.

Re: Interstates or back roads?
I've done both in my many years of road trips. Interstates cut driving time, but become boring also.
I have driven the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Natchez Trace Parkway because they connected where I was going and it was a nice drive. (Natchez Trace from Mississippi to Nashville on a motorcycle)
