| I got a bottle of 'sweet' red wine a few weeks ago, of the corked variety, and not better than the cheap champagne. Now I thought wine was supposed to be made of grapes, but grapes were not one of the ingredients for this stuff, instead raspberries, cherries and pomegranates. So what exactly is supposed to make a wine? | |

| I know very little about wine but my friend's husband makes apple wine and Door County cherry wine is really popular around here. So I know wine is not only made from grapes. | |

| Literally, Vino comes from grape vines. It is the natural fruit for wine - comes with its own yeast right on the skin.
Of course you can make any fermented fruit into an alcoholic beverage and the easiest thing to call it is blackberry, peach, or mulberry wine - but it ain't.

Which reminds me, at the store I noticed bottles of elderberry wine. What the hell is an elderberry anyway? Is that something you can recommend or would advise against?

As much as I've heard of elderberry wine, I have no idea what an elderberry is. The fruit wines other than grape I've only drank when it was home made by someone.
BTW in the '70s I had a friend in Mississippi who was into making wine. We would sometimes smoke, sometimes sit up discussing the world drinking wine. There is a comment in the bible about 'new wine' making you drunker. Well, it is true. There is more alcohol in freshly fermented wine - it is lost in ageing.

| Wine is fermented fruit, elderberry is a shrub...not necessarily a fruit, even though berries grow from it. And I knew this without the aid of Google. | |
