    Maybe I missed something but if he's now free of Klaus, then why is he still acting cold and distant?

    He obviously dosen't really want Elana to get hurt by Klaus. Stefan is self Loathing and after what he did, killing all those people and pushing Elana away, I can only think he is just hating himself right now. See his reaction when Elana told him she kissed Damon?
