Inmate Claims Torture by Bad Movies in Jail
Florida inmate James Poulin, 45, who had been incarcerated for four years awaiting trial for a DUI-manslaughter case, decided to sue the Brevard County Detention Center in November 2011 for what he called "torture." Poulin claimed that the jail's policy of barring inmates from viewing broadcast television, and instead offering the same moves repeatedly, amounted to torture. He said that because of the policy, he was forced to watch Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, Battle Front and Pearl Harbor hundreds of times each. Poulin said in an interview, "Like the old Chinese water torture, the inescapable sounds of these movies over and over works on nerves and psyche." Jail administrator Cmdr. Susan Jeter insisted that no one was forcing the inmates to watch anything and that they were free to stay in their cells if they did not want to watch movies in the dayroom.
