should prenuptual agreements be eliminated after a marriage last a certain amount of time?

For example, an actor gets married with a $300k buyout of the marriage to the spouse in the agreement. Then the actor becomes huge like mel gibson... after 5 kids and 20 years... is the woman entitled to more than the original agreement when he was not as popular as he is now?

There might be something to that idea since I doubt most marriages will even last that long. After seeing the show Dinosaurs I've often wondered also if marriages wouldn't fare better if the marriage license worked like a driver's license and had to be renewed every few years.

I wouldn't say so. I think a prenup should be ironclad unless the one who had it drawn up decides to null.

Let's see if I got this str8. Two same gender partners in a stable relationship for years CAN'T GET MARRIED, because it would destroy the sanctity of marriage, yet prenuptial agreements, which pre-supposes that the marriage will not last a lifetime are OK?

I'm at a loss on this whole concept. blank stare @ you

One has nothing to do with the other. Let's not pretend that if gays could get married that the more wealthy ones wouldn't be trying to protect their money with prenups too.

No argument there. Gay ppl are just as fucked up as str8 ppl. That is the whole point of our systematic inequality based on some ancient religious concepts in a supposed secular society. I was just pointing out the fallacy of the "sanctity of marriage" bullshit that str8 fundies keep throwing out there as a soundbite against gay marriage inclusion.

The fact that currently about half the ppl who marry eventually get divorced to the point that prenups are now common should be a clue that there is no sanctity in marriage to begin with. It has always been about property and wealth, let's not pretend it is anything more. Ppl who love each other do live happily together with or without marriage. But there are benefits to legal marriage that are being denied certain ppl on some higher pretext than pure & simple bigoted discrimination.

No. A prenup is legal contract. You get what it gives you.

I agree. There is a gay couple in Fla who have been together for a couple decades. I believe both are nurses, and one worked with crack/AIDS babies. They took one of the babies home over 19 yrs ago and have since fostered 4 more. When the oldest was a younger teenager, he petitioned the court to allow his dads who raise him to adopt him. The court denied his request, and told him that once he was 18, he could legally change his name to one of theirs---which still does not allow the state to recognize the men as next of kin in the even that something happens to him.

THIS is total bullshit. Not only do i believe that gay marriage would stimulate the economy just with the weddings alone (more business for caterers, florists, travel (honeymoons for hotels, travel agents, airlines etc), but i believe they have the right to be just as happy or miserable as heteros. And when it comes to adoption, I dont believe that ANY judge should tell an AIDS kid that was abandoned by his natural parents, that the parents who raised him are not really his parents---regardless of their orientation or gender.
