Let's say you and another person have committed a crime together. You have both been arrested and are being interrogated by police in separate rooms. If you testify against your partner in crime, and your partner remains silent, you will go free and your partner will get a one year sentence. If you both remain silent, you will both get a one month sentence. If you both testify against each other, you will both get a three month sentence.
