WASHINGTON - D.C. Police say gunshots were fired in Northeast D.C. early Sunday morning and they are now looking for a bullet-riddled SUV.

David Lee Robinson went out Saturday night dressed in a pair of Nike shoes his mother bought for him less than two months ago.

Just after 2 a.m. Sunday, D.C. Police say the 19-year-old Robinson and another man were standing at a bus stop at the intersection of 58th Street and Foote Street in Northeast waiting for the U8 bus when a small grey or silver SUV pulled up and the men inside announced a stickup.

There was an exchange of gunfire and Robinson fell dead. When police arrived, they found Robinson shoeless with a gun nearby.

The man he was with was unharmed.

Jamal Crawford was close to Robinson. He was Robinson’s God Brother and he lived in the same apartment complex on 6th Street in Shaw.

"It hurts, it really hurts, and I mean for a pair of shoes?” said Crawford. "It’s just sad for some shoes. If you want my shoes, you can have them. You don't have to take my life, just take my shoes. He had a son on the way. It hurts.”

At a gun violence vigil Sunday night, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray shared what he knew about the crime, describing it as a gun battle.

"When you look at the circumstances, it was a robbery. The victim was being robbed by the perpetrator, who has not been apprehended as of yet, but he was being robbed for his Nike tennis shoes,” said Mayor Gray.

It is unclear who had the gun recovered at the scene.

Family members say Robinson was shot in the back.

Robinson’s aunt, Tiny Cleveland, said the 19-year-old was looking forward to becoming a father in the spring.

D.C. Police are looking for the car used in the robbery. Police say it is a small grey or silver SUV with bullet holes and broken glass.

Robinson is the third person to be killed in the city so far this year.

You know, in cases like this, when they catch the guy, with me I ALWAYS would like to hear the shooters justify themselves, please explain to us how a life is not as important as a pair of shoes, how it was necessary to KILL somebody for their shoes. Wouldn't anybody else just love to know that?
