GOP Says Christians Discriminated Against More Than Gays
By Lucas Grindley
When a viewer asked what gay couples should do who want to "form, loving committed relationships," answers from Republican candidates during Tuesday's debate devolved into a case for why it's actually Christians who are being persecuted.
"The bigotry question goes both ways," declared Newt Gingrich. "And there is a lot more anti-Christian bigotry today than there is concern on the other side, and none of it gets covered by the news media."
Rick Perry decried "this administration's war on religion." The Texas governor ran a now infamous ad in December that has been roundly mocked online complaining how unfair he believes it is that gay people can serve openly in the military while Christians are supposedly forced to hide their beliefs. He pointed to President Obama's decision to abandon a legal defense of the Defense of Marriage Act, which the president considers unconstitutional, as one battle of that war. DOMA bans the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages that are legal in some states while also ensuring states aren't forced to recognize them when performed elsewhere.
Mitt Romney was governor in Massachusetts when the courts ruled that marriage equality was required by their constitution, and he warned that "this decision about what we call marriage has consequences." Romney lamented that Catholic Charities had opted not to run adoption and foster care in Massachusetts because the law no longer allowed the group receive state money and discriminate against same-sex couples who had married there. Romney said LGBT people should be allowed to raise children, but they should ideally be raised by a male and a female, describing gay couples as inferior to straight ones in the same way that being raised by a single parent would be.
Rick Santorum has the same view but goes further. He said recently on the campaign trial in New Hampshire that same-sex parents were worse for children than being raised by a convict. Santorum said during Saturday's debate that part of his goal in banning same-sex marriage via an amendment to the U.S. Constitution is to prevent LGBT couples from adopting or fostering children, describing that as a side effect that makes the current problem "moot."
Santorum also reiterated his belief that those couples who have already wed (1,800 in New Hampshire alone) should have their marriages dissolved.
Candidates Romney and Gingrich suggested that gay couples should establish a "contractual relationship" instead of a marriage. Jon Huntsman backed civil unions, which he advocated for in his state.
"I think there is such a thing as equality under the law," said Huntsman, who also opposes same-sex marriage. "I don't feel that my relationship is at all threatened by civil unions."

Equality Under the Law? You mean like Social Security law?
Right now I am drawing survivor benefits from my late wife's social security. We were legally married for more than 10 years, the requirement to draw such benefits and since she was an RN made more money than I did, so the monthly check is bigger.
Now had I stayed partners with another guy for 18 years, it would mean squat to Social Security. That is why 'civil unions' and 'contractual relationships' are not the same as 'marriage.'
These guys are so full of bullshit they haven't a clue of what they speak.

I think Republicans, as well as Democrats and any other "party" out there should concentrate on:
A. Fixing the national budget
B. Creating more jobs
C. Healthcare
D. Criminal justice system
E. Taking control of illegal immigration
Too much mincing words on he-said, she-said, as far as the Gay-topic and religion topic. I think God wants them to get off their asses already and fix the above list, and however you choose to get your jollies, keep it in your own freakin' bedroom with the door shut.

I know a lesbian couple who have been together about 40 years, they have to lie to their neighbors that they are sisters, and when one dies there will be no automatic survivor rights. So they have had to have more legal crap with lawyers and all than a married survivor has to deal with. I wonder what will happen when one is hospitalized and "only family" is allowed in.

I think that part has recently been addressed because of a heartbreaking event here in FL where a visiting lesbian could not be with her long long term companion while she died in a hospital - because she was not recognized as the only family member. If a hospital received fed money (Medicare) they have to accommodate same-sex partners

Goddamn, they are even more delusional than I thought!
Of course, that would all depend on me actually believing that THEY BELIEVE what they are saying, and I don't. For the record, no sane person believes this for one moment and these guys may be crazy but they're not stupid. They're just selling their bogus message to stupid people who are dumb enough to buy it. Kind of like how that company that sells "extenz" male enhancement pills to guys dumb enough to believe that it makes your penis grow bigger, haha. They're laughing all the way to the bank. In this case, the GOP is laughing all the way to the voting booth.

Christians are discriminated against more than gays. That's an irrefutable fact. The difference is that liberals think it's okay to discriminate against Christians, so they justify their bigotry and explain it away. There's always an explanation to justify the hypocrisy. The left in this country is full of bigoted nutjobs who make the religious crowd look ambivalent in their bias. It's time to stop sugarcoating the left as people who care because they don't. They discriminate many times more than the other side and they do it under the masquerade of tolerance.

Well I am refuting it right now, unless you can show us these alleged "facts" that backs up this claim. The FACT is, this is a completely ridiculous and illogical assumption that is essentially baseless. It's merely a conservative talking point, but one that doesn't have any true basis in reality. Its an excuse for them to continue justify "gay bashing" by calling everyone else "hypocrites". You couldn't name ONE respected group of any real influence in this country that practices discrimination against "Christians" as part of its Modus operandi. Mainstream Christianity on the other hand practices systemic discrimination against gays as part of its official doctrine! And just about every private "Christian" based organization like the BSA also discriminate against gays. Furthermore, gays are also descriminated against by Jews, Muslims, Mormon's and non-religious homophobes as well. Who exactly is discriminating against Christians? In what way are the Christians being discriminated? There is no "Christian discrimination", NONE whatsoever! So this attempt at a comparrison is really just silly, and you know it!Forgiveness Man wrote:Christians are discriminated against more than gays. That's an irrefutable fact.

I heard a group of atheists chased down a christian and beat the person with a strap. Then they tied him to a barbed wire fence in the middle of Kansas in the blazing sun while pouring baby oil over his body. The atheists chanted pro freedom songs and left laughing as the christian bled to death bound to the barbed wire fence.
This is happening everyday, but the liberal leftist media controlled by Rupert Murdoch refuses to report this violence..

With all due respect, you are missing the point. ^That^ is NOT an example of "discrimination". That is an example of a few STUPID morons committing a hate crime. A "group of atheists" means absolutely NOTHING! That does not represent an organization anymore than a group of white people lynching a black man represent "white people".zthatzmanz28 wrote:I heard a group of atheists chased down a christian and beat the person with a strap. Oh, and if the liberal media is so tight lipped about incidents such as this, then how did YOU hear about? And where might we find this story so that we can verify it for ourselves?

I thot he was being quite facetious - sarcastically referencing the brutal murder of Matthew Sheppard. Atheists are seldom involved in some of the brutality that Christians quite commonly engage, such as the Christian Identity, Survivalists and the KKK.

In going back to read the article (and then some) again I find it strangely ironic that not one single instance of actual christian "discrimination" was noted. Just whining about some ambiguous persecution. I wasn't aware that christians were being denied human rights solely based on their religion. Of course there's a good reason for that.

I hesitantly agree that Christians may be more socially discriminated against than gays BUT Christians have much more political power and pull than gays do.

As I said above, that's because there is NO SUCH THING. Anyone making the claim of "Christian discrimination" will inevitably fail to produce any example that amounts to evidence of such. It's a right wing talking point, nothing more, nothing less. There is NO anti-Christian conspiracy and there is NO government organization or private organization supported by government funds that practices Christian discrimination. It's NONSENSE!CeCe wrote:In going back to read the article (and then some) again I find it strangely ironic that not one single instance of actual christian "discrimination" was noted. It's just ridiculous to hear them say their "rights are being taken away". But they never specify exactly what "rights" they're talking about. Aside from outright bigotry I think some of them have a misunderstanding of the definition of freedom of religion. When anything conflicts with THEIR beliefs they make themselves the victim. Of course they can also be very selective about those conflicts too.
