Not my choice of career, but the jobs and work hours within that career were totally dictated by the needs of my family.
Up to now, I was never able to take a supervisor position because you need to be available 24/7, and I had to switch to evenings and nights for work hours when my mother in law died and we suddenly had no daycare.

No. I went into the Air Force right out of high school and worked in an office for most of the 4 years.
My first job getting out of the service was to work on an oil rig in Mississippi where my uncle was the tool pusher (boss) and another uncle a driller (shift boss). So, you might say I went into the family business but that only lasted a month and I learned that was not a career choice for me.
Of course my 'career' has been a disparate number of jobs over the years, from Office to cop to pizza/hoagy maker, to street sweeper to nursing assistant, etc. (even a little dealing).

My parents actually fell flat on the floor when I said I wanted to go to college. My mom was shocked and my dad laughed for almost 2 weeks! Everyday dad asked if I knew how to spell college..mom said that there was nothing wrong with manual labor.
They didn't actually encourage it until I announced I was getting married. After they met my fiancee`, they could get me into college fast enough and away from her.
Looking back, they were much smarter that I gave them credit for...You should have seen my mom and heard my dad when I told them I was going to be a teacher.
