A distraught young mother left her 6-month-old with firefighters at a West Side firehouse Monday morning after telling them she couldn’t deal with being a mother anymore, fire officials say.

The 19-year-old walked up to Engine 107 in the 1100 block of South California Avenue about 9 a.m. with a well-bundled and fed infant boy, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.

The woman appeared to be distraught and said she wanted to leave the child “because she couldn’t deal with her situation anymore,” Langford said.

Firefighters did not question the woman and did not get her name. The “Safe Haven” law allows parents to drop off their infants to police stations, firehouses and hospitals, but only for children under 30 days old.

Still, firefighters did not refuse the 6-month-old child.

The mother stayed at the firehouse until the baby was taken to a hospital. Then, she just walked away, Langford said.

She did the right thing. And so did the firemen even though the baby's 5 1/2 months older than the law applies to.

Yeah, best thing. But the legal red tape with this will probably deliver this baby right back to mamma in less than a year. That is what is sad.

Glad she did that rather than some of the alternatives. But I hope this girl will realize that she's not ready for this yet & allow the child to be adopted by people who are & can give him a stable home.

If what Red said is true, at least the woman should have some time to figure it out before the baby's returned to her.

Can't hate on what she did at all. She prob suffers from post partum. At least she was rational enough not to do something stupid.

A sad scenario, but she could have handled the situation much worse.

The baby is safe, and it appears she cared about him too. He isn't dead in a dumpster.

i honestly believe the law should be expanded to older children. A young mother who did not want to abort and truly was trying, but not getting by should be able to adopt out her child without being made to feel guilty, which is what i imagine would happen if she went to an adoption agency. and state agencies would claim that they do not have the funding to take the child.
