Would you hire an ex-con?

Depends on what I did. Obviously not if he / she needed to be bonded.

My family used to hire ex cons & parolees at our auto body shop. The ones that have learned their lessons are incredibly hard working. They appreciated the job and the health benefits for their families. and the shop got some kind of tax deduction for hiring them. Many of them had drug/alcohol/gambling problems which is what got them in trouble to begin with. So my family set up a time for them to have daily meetings one of the offices--it helped keep everyone on the straight and narrow. There were a couple who reverted to their old ways, but for the most part, they were good employees and people.

The biggest draw back was the parole officers calling and showing up to check on them. Everytime they called/visited, the employee had to stop working and deal with it.

Yea, if they've paid their debt to society and willing to move on, I'd give them a job.

Honestly, it would depend on what they did and what I wanted them to do. But the fact that you've been to jail wouldn't scare me though. I've known plenty of people who've been in prison.

sometimes people get a raw deal in life too. One of our employees had gone to jail for manslaughter. I was scared until I heard the story. He was going with a woman who had a crazy stalking ex. The ex called the new boyfriend at home and told him, "I'm on my way over and gonna put a cap in your ass". He was scared and called the police. In the meantime, he went into the hall of his apartment, took the light bulb out to darken the area and hid in the apartment. when the ex broke down the door and fired, the guy fired back and killed him. Then the police showed up. Because he took out the lightbulb, it displayed premeditated murder, and therefore he was looking at life in prison. He pleaded to manslaughter and got 15 yrs.

That is f@#$ed up.

Sometimes our system is one fucked up mess that seems to favor the bad guy.
