Red Tails

This is probably a guy flick. Or for those who are into historical air battles of World War II.
It is one of those movies that, according to critics has faults and only a third of them on the aggregate reviews liked it, whereas three-fourths of audiences thot it was a good movie.
Of the criticism was that the characters were clichéd and the dialogue was stilted and corny. But, all agreed that the aerial dogfights were done well - and that is what we come to these movies to see.
The story is pretty much what it has always been, the racial segregation of the United States and the Military in the early 1940s, which was a detriment to our war effort by not allowing capable black men to pilot planes in combat. Colonel A J Bullard (Terrence Howard) had to deal with the high ranking bigots in the Pentagon to allow the 99th Fighter Squadron to serve in combat.
This racism was brot out in the movie and how the valor and combat flight skills of these black airmen did receive the respect of the white airmen who came to realize that their lives were dependent on them.
Bombers Flying with Escorts
There was the usual mixture of comrades in arms, the flight leader Martin "Easy" Julian (Nate Parker) who had a drinking problem, the top gun, hothead, womanizer Joe ''Lightning'' Little (David Oyelowo), the kid Junior "Ray Gun" Gannon (Tristan Wilds) and others whom I just can't recall.
Junior, Easy & Lightning
Of course I liked this movie. It has personal relevance to me since my namesake Uncle Bob was a bomber pilot in Europe during that war and was shot down in a B-17 and held POW for some time. I don't know if he ever encountered the Red Tails, but they were part of that history.
