Supernova, it plays now on AntennaTV channel!

Sometimes she is funny as hell. She tries to go overboard on liberal issues... civil rights for blacks and gays--- but she usually looks like an idiot when she does. It really did deal with issues of the day.

In one episode just after the legalization of abortion, maude finds out that she is pregnant at like 49 yrs old. She debates having the baby vs an abortion. She had the abortion, and when it originally aired, there was not really too much backlash--- but later during a re-run, people were threatening to boycott the sponsors and everything. It was the first tv show to tackle some issues.

And yes, it was a spin off of all in the family--- maude was originally edith's cousin.

Funny that it wouldn't have had the lynch mob after it during the initial premiere. But yeah that's why my mother did not like that show because Maude had an abortion. Now one episode I wondered about, what happened the time she and her friend were trying to get some marijuana so they could get arrested and protest it?

It was one of the many spin offs of All In the Family. Maude was Edith's cousin (I think) and Florida Evans was her maid. Pretty contoversial for it's day like when she had an abortion.

I liked that Maude was a show that made a liberal look like the dope after All In The Family tried so hard (and ultimately failed) to make them look smart. Of course, as funny as Maude was, she was never funnier than the episode when she was on All in the Family. Maude vs. Archie was must-see TV.

I liked it, and will still watch a rerun, but it wasn't one of my favorites. Bea Arthur was very funny, though.

Was that the one where Archie went to a motel room for the night and unknowingly broke up the bachelor party for Maude's daughter's fiancee?

That one was the back-door pilot for Maude. It was an episode of All in the Family but it wasn't the one I was referring to. The episode that I was talking about was earlier that season when Maude came to help Edith when Archie, Mike, and Gloria all got sick at the same time.

Meh. It was before my time and I don't remember syndicated reruns ever running locally when I was a kid, but I think in the late 90's TV Land put it on the schedule for a year or so and I caught some of the episodes there. I found the show loud and annoying. Maude herself was kind of "harsh" in her presentation and the supporting cast/characters weren't that likeable either. I liked Bea and Rue better as Dorothy and Blanche, and Conrad Bain better as Mr. Drummond.
