"You're Grounded!"

What did that phrase mean when you were a kid? What privileges did you lose and for how long?

I was never grounded. I grounded my kids but never more than a few days at a time. I watched others ground their kids for months or years and of course it never lasted. But 2 to 4 days seemed to work well.

I wasn't grounded either.
If I did something wrong I copped a whack.

I was never grounded but I always took it as meaning no TV, no phone, no music, no friends, etc., just do house work all day.

Meant I couldn't go outside, no video games, no friends over, and phone calls. I could still watch tv though.

I was told twice that i was grounded... once when I was 12... it meant being confined to my room (which i wanted to be in anyway) where i had a tv, vcr, stereo, and own phone--- some punishment!

The second was when I was 17. Me and my best friend drove 5 hours away to a naval base to go meet a couple of guys. That one was a real grounding.. mom took my car keys and gas card--- i dont remember for how long.. probably a week or so

I was never grounded for anything longer than a week. But when I was, I ended up losing ALL privileges for that week! A permenant curfew was in place, meaning the only place outside I was allowed to go was school. Then I had to come home immediately and do homework, then chores. No TV, no video games, no telephone. We didn't have "internet" back then so that wasn't an issue. The only thing I was allowed to do was to listen to music IF it was low enough and all my work was done. Other than that, I was expected to read. It sucked, but like I said, I was never punished like that for longer than a week as far as I can remember.

Actually, my parents never used that phrase. Instead they would say "You're on punishment." It usually meant no phone, no leaving the house (except for for school) and possibly no TV/earlier bedtime.

I didn't get myself grounded cause I wasn't bad.
