In my car the gears are park, reverse, neutral, drive, then 2 and L, what the hell are these last two gears for?

The last two let you use the engine as a brake, by slowing down the vehicle, via the engine itself. Unless you're driving a semi, my advice is to not ever use those--wearing out your brakes and replacing those is far less expensive than getting an engine job because you over-worked it by making it do something you really don't need to do with it.

JUst DO NOT use "L" over 30-35 MPH..."L" is also like 1st, it is a LOW gear that can be used in slippery conditions to get started. It is usually good up to 25 MPH. 2 is second gear and usually good for 25-40 MPH. There are RARE times you might have to manually start out in a lower gear than DRIVE for traction.
I would be very hesitant to use 2 or L for an engine brake at speeds over 40 MPH. Also you would use 2 if you had a small trailer or some weight in the car and you were going though the Rockies or Appalachians and D was just chugging along on an UPWARD climb.

I always thought those last two gears were for driving uphill or if something was attached to the back of the car.
