    Question infestations

    Post by wants2laugh Sat Feb 04, 2012 10:53 am

If your house became infested with an animal, and i mean like 400 bats... or dozens of squirrels.... and the exterminator told you that it was illegal to trap or kill them, would you still do it?

Just saw a show where this couple bought a house where the attic was infested with hundreds of bats. They were told that it was an endangered species, and they had to wait several months for the babies to grow up enough to be able to fly on their own. While these people were living in a trailer in their front yard, bat guano was seeping thru their ceilings and down their walls! So much so that it cost $30,000 to clean the damn place.

Would you have waited months, or would you have taken matters into your own hands?

I wouldn't have killed them but I would have done some preventive measures to deal with the batshit and maybe built a bat tower for them and moved them which would have been cheaper.

How long after they bought the house that they found out they had bats in their belfry? So to speak. Were the bats there before they were? They didn't have a home inspection? Pretty dumb if they didn't but I would still be on the phone to a good lawyer. And to answer the question, no I personally wouldn't be fucking around with anything that had a great potential for having rabies.

    Question Re: infestations

I think I would take matters into my own hands. Although if it was here in Oregon, they might have had assistance through state animal rescue. They'd have to prove that they weren't intentionally housing the damn bats ~ otherwise they could get into trouble for being animal hoarders.

This is crap. It's a health and safety issue, which could very affect neighbors as well, and do major damage to their home.

Bureacrazy at it's best (note how I spelled that).

something similar happened to our neighborhood when some families of bald eagles flew in and nested. Before 2007, they were on the endangered species list.. and we had noise ordinances, and reduced speeds we could drive on land and waterways... apparently the noise and vibrations would send them away... they might even leave their young in the nests.

For like 20yrs my neighborhood was quite... and you weren't allowed to chop down any trees, and had to have special permits before you could do renovations to your house--- not housing permits--- but some sort of Bald and Golden Eagle Act permits.

when they would nest in people attics, sheds, garages.. there was literally nothing we were permitted to do.

so i do feel for these people with the bats

When one of our neighbors told me how thrilling it was to watch the bats fly out of their attic at night, I had my husband check our entire house for any holes that might allow bats to get in. Fortunately there were none!

Bats in the attic of a little house? Isn't that cute!

We were able to see this when we visited one of my wife's brothers when he lived in Austin.

Wouldn't matter to me. I'm not living house with an infestation of anything, let alone bats. If animal control refuses to alleviate the problem for me, then I'll get rid of them myself and take the fine.
