Do you ever do this? When our beloved dog of 14 years died 8 years ago we were all inconsolable, he was family. And for two days I would not go outside, he lived on the back porch, had his dog house out there, his chain, his food, everything. But I was finally able to go out back without thinking about it, and over the years, were it not for his dog house still being on the back porch, and inhabited by our kitty who oddly enough behaves very much like he did, I think it would be almost easy for me to forget he was there. But my mother, my brother and father, all of them, every time they go out the back way or come up the driveway they still expect to see him there, to see him come running up, and get under my dad's truck. Even after all this time they still look for him, and I never do, and I don't know why that is.

My cat used to stay under the dining room table and for a little while I used to look there almost expecting to see her. After a few months passed I just didn't look anymore.

I have done that with childhood pets. When all three were gone I still expected to be greeted with barking when I went to my parents' house. I bet it took about a year to get used to it. Now Dad has a new dog and it will be strange when he is gone.

Every evening when I came home from work I would go into the bedroom to change clothes. By the time I had emptied my pockets on the dresser I would turn around to find our cat sitting on the bed looking to be picked up. For a few weeks after she passed last summer I would still turn around expecting her to be there. I feel kind of silly but my eyes are watering as I write this.

For a good year after our daughter died I (we) expected to see her come through the front door.
And since my sister-in-law died two years ago I always expect to see her enter the livingroom and walk over to my brother whenever I'm at his house.

I am so, so sorry for your loss. I can't begin to imagine what you went through and are still going through.

Re: Looking for someone after they die
For weeks after we lost our old kitty I could hear her. I missed her so . After about a year a friend was moving and had a calico cat she needed a home for.We took her Princess renamed her Fancy and loved her dearly so much that when she died I couldn't stand remembering how she went and insisted we get another cat. Fancy is the picture in my Avatar I will always miss her, but I love Squeak to bits too.
