Maine football coach resigns after naked picture posted on Facebook

OXFORD, Maine — A high school football coach who posted a nude photo of himself on Facebook has resigned.

School Superintendent Rick Colpitts confirmed to the Sun Journal that former Oxford Hills School District football coach Paul Withee posted a photo that was intended to be seen by a personal friend but was inadvertently posted to the public.

Withee has refused public comment on the incident. Oxford Hills Superintendent Rick Colpitts told Portland ABC affiliate WMTW that the photo was only online for approximately 10 minutes before it was removed.

Despite being online for a short period of time, Withee’s rather bare photo was seen by a football parent, who immediately reported the incident. It has not been divulged whether Withee removed the photo of his own accord or whether he was told that the shot could be seen by his entire Facebook network and then took it down.

Colpitts accepted Withee’s resignation on Monday.

Withee was placed on paid leave after a parent notified district officials on Feb. 7. He told the newspaper that “I’m embarrassed, I’m ashamed, I’m humiliated.” He said his Facebook page was not available to the public and that none of his Facebook “friends” were students.

Withee took the Oxford Hills job last March after 19 years at Foxcroft Academy, where his teams won three state championships.
