If one of your parents, your siblings, or grown child were behaving so erratically that you felt they were losing their sanity, would you have them forcibly institutionalized?

Re: Institutionalizing family
Yes, if they were a threat to themselves or others. I have had a family member involuntarily committed to a psych unit after attempted suicide. I think that is just a legal requirement, out of family member control. But that only lasts for 72 hours. Longer than that is up the the insurance co. which cuts you loose too soon. (if you kill yourself it doesn't cost them money.)

Re: Institutionalizing family
I would try to figure out the reason and get them help....but having them institutionalized would be my last resort.

It would be a last resort, but not out of the question.

Re: Institutionalizing family
Yeah, I would if it meant keeping them and others safe.

Re: Institutionalizing family
If that person is a danger to others, or himself, and he/she does not cooperate with what they need to take care of themselves, then YES!
I have a nephew who's been living in some type of "half-way house" (schizophrenia) for several years, and he was recently released into his sister's guardianship. So far so good but he's been known to disappear. And if he falls off his regime then everyone else around him suffers (imagine Ozzy Osbourne babbling at his worst about 10 years ago). Hopefully he will remain responsible, as she is the only family member willing to take him in.
