Question Which school of philosophy would you join?

Post by Chris Fri Mar 30, 2012 2:52 am

Lets say you are being raised in a culture where everyone is expected to choose a philosophy before they become an adult. The options listed are the most common choices. A very brief description is provided to give you a taste of what each philosophy is like:

Absurdism - finding meaning in life is absurd because life is inherently unknowable.
Cynicism - the purpose of life is to live a life of virtue in agreement with nature.
Epicureanism - Seek pleasure in life by living modestly and learning about the world while limiting one's desires.
Existentialism - the individual is solely responsible for giving his or her own life meaning and for living that life passionately and sincerely
Hedonism - a school of thought which argues that pleasure is the only intrinsic good.
Nihilism - life is without objective meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value
Stoicism - destructive emotions resulted from errors in judgment

    This one sounds good:

Existentialism - the individual is solely responsible for giving his or her own life meaning and for living that life passionately and sincerely

We are responsible for the majority of our experiences. Outside of a third party being involved with negative or positive behavior, we make ourselves happy or sad in the long run. There are external events that will affect our attitude, but when it is all said and done, we are able to assign long-term values to our expectations.
Whatever others do to us is only temporary.
