Heartbroken Claire Holley smashed her boyfriend's car into a bowling alley where he worked
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned – especially, it seems, one unceremoniously dumped via the internet.
So upset was Claire Holley when her boyfriend changed his relationship status to ‘single’ on Facebook that she took his beloved car and crashed it into the bowling alley where he worked.
A court heard how Holley, 31, downed several glasses of wine and vodka before driving Davy Jones’s silver Ford Focus to the Hollywood Bowl in Horwich, near Bolton.
She smashed the car through two security bollards and a set of glass double doors, sending customers diving for cover, before coming to rest at a customer service counter inside the bowling alley. She caused £14,000 of damage.
Soon afterwards Mr Jones was seen running towards the car, saying: ‘You have wrecked my car.’
Yesterday the mother-of-three narrowly escaped jail after admitting dangerous driving and drink-driving.
Bolton Crown Court heard that Holley and Mr Jones had been in a relationship for two years and had a child together.
On the day of the incident in January, the couple had been arguing before Holley dropped Mr Jones off at work at 5pm.
Geoff Whelan, prosecuting, told the court: ‘She texted asking him not to leave and to come back home. She had written things on Facebook saying she was heartbroken and crushed.’
Mr Jones later changed his Facebook status to ‘single’.
Angry at being jilted online, Holley drank half a bottle of wine and two large vodkas, and left her children, aged 11, five and one, with Mr Jones’s sister. At around 10pm, witnesses saw Holley parked in Mr Davy’s car outside the bowling alley, revving the engine loudly.
She then ploughed the car through the entrance. Fortunately no one was injured.
Witness Stephanie-Kate Burrell, 22, said: ‘There were people in there bowling and they all started running out. It was total panic.’
The court heard that Holley, of Little Hulton near Bolton, had 50 micrograms of alcohol on her breath when she was arrested. The legal limit is 35mg. Peter Cunliffe, defending, said Holley’s intention was to kill herself, not to hurt Mr Jones or others.
Sentencing Holley to nine months’ jail, suspended for two years, Recorder Robert Crawford said: ‘I think you were very emotionally upset. You have missed going to jail by the skin of your teeth. You are a very lucky woman.’
The judge banned Holley from driving for 18 months and ordered that she obey a 8pm to 7am curfew for four months.
