Should junk food be banned in schools? Vending

According to Reuters, the U.S. is coming close to banning junk food (i.e. vending machines with sweets and other fattening foods) in schools. Do you think that's a good idea or no?

I think they should be banned because kids get enough of that stuff at it is. There would be nothing wrong with having granola bars, bagged pretzals and crackers vs. ice cream and candy.

Shrugs (Oh well…) I'd rather thay ban junk food vending machines than mandate that all the students have to eat brocolli. As much as I love brocolli.

No, they should ban students from driving, make them walk 2 or 3 miles lugging books. They should ban cell phones, making kids walk for blocks to see ppl they wanted to talk to and ban electronic games, making kids sweat IRL.

I am just amazed how we became a nation of fatties in a couple of generations and junk food is only part of the equation. Our technological sedentary lifestyle is just as bad as the intake of fat and calories.

When I was a kid I ate junk food. Chuck-a-Burger was across the street from our high school and even gave coupons in our yearbook for our loyalty. We ate all that terrible food, but didn't get fat. My friends and I walked two miles home from school - then got our bikes and went out in the neighborhood. We played IRL, not on some gameboard.

Sorry if I sound like an old man but hey, that's what I am.

I agree. Not so sure the weight issue now is due so much to junk food as the vegetation in front of the comp or tv. I had chips by the bag & soda by the case. Never had a problem. But I walked to town to get them.

And learning a little moderation would help. But the food in the cafeteria is probably not much better than the vending machines.

I mean, they already do it here. Schools don't serve soda or candy bars anymore. I'm indifferent to it I guess....because kids are still buying whatever they want and bringing it to school anyway.

Shrugs (Oh well…) If their parents are giving them money to buy a few sweets during lunch time, I don't see a problem.
