With all today's modern financial conveniences - not to mention the distain of the people behind them in line, why do some people still pay at the checkout counter by writing a check? Don't just say it's old people afraid of new technologies. I see people of all ages paying for their purchases with checks, and sometimes for amounts as low as two or three dollars.

Re: check writing
Well, it's unusual but I occasionally still do use checks at the stand. However, I fill everything out before I get to the register except for the amount. The time spent filling out the amount is no slower than using a card.
In fact, I often wonder why it takes so long for some people to use their cards.
I'm a cash person.

Re: check writing
We use checks very infrequently. There's a good chance we'll never have to order any new ones unless we change banks.

Re: check writing
We never use checks at the store. We did use checks to pay our bills, NEVER going electronic for that one, BUT when some of the checks started coming up missing or not getting deposited and we couldn't get the book to balance, we started getting money orders to pay with instead. But yeah at the store it's all cash, or gift cards when the opportunity arises.

People know they're going to use a check so they should do this just out of common courtesy. If they did, it would be just as fast as going debit or credit.

Re: check writing
I don't use checks, don't own checks. I use money orders for certain payments.

Re: check writing
I don't really mind when people write checks because back in the day it happened all the time.

Re: check writing
LOL, who's still writing checks? I have a checkbook, but I doubt I'll EVER use it. It's a just in case thing. Merchants in NYC don't even accept checks anyway. If I have to pay a bill, I'd much rather pay to get a money order.

Re: check writing
I just dropped off the pool pass application last Sunday. Used a check. I'm not buying a money order for that. Same for a subscription renewal I made a few months ago with the state. There's a Polish deli I go to sometimes. They only take cash or checks. No plastic. That's rare of course.

Re: check writing
I have boxed of checks that I haven't taken out of the pack yet. The last time I wrote a check was when I had my taxes done and it was the only payment they took. I can't fathom now going to the supermarket and writing a check. Seems very pre-2001.

Re: check writing
i dont know about the bank fees where you guys are ... but some of the banks here are not charging for using your visa check card too often. if you use it as a debit card over 10 times a month you get charged a flat rate, then if you use it as a visa over 10 times a month you could get a percentage fee.
we have become so accustomed to using our cards that we are not mindful to these types of fees. Im SOOOO freakin broke now, that now that you mention it, im gonna start looking into those fees!
