They're two totally different cuisines. I tend to have more (American versions of) Chinese but I like Japanese too.

Around here, the Chinese places are pretty cheap while the Japanese places are costly. The Japanese places have sushi, so to me, that is the main difference other than cost and quality of food.

To me they're not similar. Much prefer Chinese.

IDK if I've ever had Japanese food and the Chinese food I've had originated in San Francisco, so IDK if I've ever had real Chinese food.
I know the Chinese eat rats & dogs, so being vegetarian I won't be eating that.

Re: chinese food vs japanese food
I prefer Chinese, we have this restaurant here (my fave Chinese restaurant here) with 2 different menus. 1 is the more Americanized version of Chinese food, the other is an authentic menu, that they would serve in China (that's the owner told me). I've only had 1 dish (which was great) from the authentic menu, I'm too chicken shit to try other things from that menu.

Re: chinese food vs japanese food
I can...but I don't eat Chinese food anymore. I remember back in high school though, .I had a classmate who was Chinese and her family owned the typical Chinese restaurant that most of you eat from. She invited a few of us over for dinner at her house one night. What the Chinese serve in their restaurants and what they serve at home are TOTALLY and COMPLETELY different. Now THAT Chinese food, I can eat...provided that I can identify it. The stuff that most of you eat from Chinese restaurants is garbage. And she even clued me in. They will never serve that food to their own families. And what I saw at the pier has pretty much sullied me from ever eating anything from a Chinese restaurant again.
