| Is it justifiable to force someone to join a union as a condition of employment? | |

| No. Just as it's not to deny employment for joining one. | |

| I'm pro-union, so I can't imagine anyone opting out of it, but it happens. At my employment one can remain non-union but that person can't pocket the wages that would pay for union dues. It has to go to a charity of choice. | |

| That always went against my sense of freedom. I woulda had to join the Teamsters if I stayed at the MoPac more than a month.
And, you don't refuse the Teamsters. | |

| Yes and it caused terrible harship and devastation when the union's financial investment company was found to have stolen everyone's 401k's and pensions.
I worked for a company that paid health insurance claims for various unions. No, they couldn't force us to join but the pressure put on new employees was great and we couldn't get any kind of health benefits if we didn't join because the union supplied them.
Our union had been warned the investment company they were using was shady and not reliable. They were advised to switch but refused. Probably politics. I saw a lot of that in the other unions who were our clients.
When the sh*t finally went down, it was devastating. The investment company had been operating a Ponzi-type scheme for years and when it blew, it was larger than the Enron fiasco.

| DAMN... our union is not forced. if you are not in the union, you do not receive money from certain grievances that it wins. Postal management is sooo into proving they are in control, that they constantly violate our rights. I was in the hospital and got fired to attendance---that is a federal job... WITH a union... so i can't imagine what the heck companies without unions would do to people! However, i think that if you don't pay into a union, you should not enjoy the benefits of it either. I love the people who scream and yell that manangement sucks... that they did this or that...etc... demands a shop steward, and then tells you " i hate this union, that is why i dont pay dues!" that part sux | |
