| Robert Zeigler (pictured), of the West Village Coaltion, is spearheading an effort to see Christopher Street landmarked and marked by a Hollywood-style walk of fame from Sixth Avenue to the Hudson River, according to DNAinfo. Arguing that specific, visible recognition of gay history is long overdue, Zeigler cited the historic 1969 riot at the Stonewall Inn (then located at 51-53 Christopher), and a host of other area events/people worthy of note. He will be collecting signatures for his petition at the Boots & Saddle Bar on 76 Christopher Street throughout NYC Pride, starting June 17. At this time, The Stonewall Inn is also part of the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Because the area is already also landmarked as part of the Greenwich Village Historical District, any changes to the sidewalk or storefronts currently need Landmarks and Preservation Committee approval. http://newyork.nearsay.com/nyc/west-village-greenwich-village/christopher-street-gay-landmark?utm_source=New+York+City&utm_campaign=8e1481432b-Week_In_Review_06_16_2012&utm_medium=email | |

| Yep, one of the last civil rights struggles in the US - we should have historic landmarks commemorating the history. | |

| I think it's a good idea. I really just wish gay folks would take Christopher Street back. It's become disgustingly straight (no offense to straight folks) and boring. | |

I grew up and still live on the East side where the scene is so different so I used to love to go down Christopher. That whole flavor is gone. There are still a few bars around, but it's almost now what you would equate to "gentrification". The place be now for gays is further uptown in Chelsea.

None taken. Cool because I didn't really know what other way to put it. The Village has become a tourist trap as with a lot of Manhattan.
